I love this stitch! It creates a great 3D effect and is easy to use on many different types of canvas elements. Some of my favorite uses for this stitch are tree branches or flower stems, cursive writing, tires and anything else you might want to really jump off of your canvas.
My friend Merideth Henry, the owner of The Flying Needles, gave me the great tip to stitch the chain element of this stitch in velvet. It gives the base layer quite a bit of volume while keeping it very smooth and easy to wrap. Flat ribbon fibers are the best to use when wrapping the chain, but you can really use any thread your heart desires!
